When you are first introduced to Alicia Smith, most don’t expect to meet the youthful 34 year old hospital operations leader from Memphis, Tennessee. This business-savvy executive was a middle careerist who was recently promoted to Associate Vice President at one of the leading Chicago area hospitals. Her winning smile takes you by storm, but behind her welcoming southern hospitality is a woman who gets the job done. Family-oriented, she has a nurturing, selfless approach in all she does.
Her educational journey at both the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee and her professional experience has granted her the ability to assess and weigh decisions wisely. She is capable of seamlessly coordinating almost every patient support aspect of the hospital. For the past three (3) years, she has been leading a team of talented directors through a complete hospital transformation as they prepare for the opening of their new 800,000 square feet Tower designed around the needs and care of the patient. She admits that her role is no easy task, however, “in the midst of it all,” she still finds time to reach back and lend a helping hand.
Alicia mentors numerous graduate students from Universities in and outside of Chicago on a regular basis. She often extends her lunch time to discuss career paths, work/life balance, continuing studies and offers her expertise on workplace attire and behaviors. Excellence is the key to success, and she teaches the students that it must reflect in your reports, communication and also appearance. Alicia is a wonderful example of how women can be effective leaders and not compromise on style. In addition to her mentoring efforts, she recently spearheaded the establishment of the first scholarship to assist under-represented African-American students at Rush University Medical Center who desire to become future leaders in the healthcare management field.
A competent healthcare executive accountable for hundreds of employees in operations is impressive. One who knows the value of education, strong work ethics and mentoring is excellent. One who demonstrates all of the afore mentioned qualities while remaining fabulous is a Diva in Healthcare!
