Girlfriends Health Guide for
Women of Color Advocacy Network
The mission of the Girlfriends Advocacy Network is to promote the
elimination of health disparities as it relates to women of color in
health care. We will disseminate information and provide access on how
to contact State and Federal Legislators regarding the issues that
affect women of color and their families.
Our objective is to have an impact on the decisions that are made on
our behalf. The general focus will be on access to health care,
education and prevention as it relates to Health Disparities. While we
know that the reasons for Health Disparities vary, we realize that laws
and regulations can have a profound and immediate impact on the
elimination.
Advocacy is the pursuit of influencing outcomes — including public
policy and resource allocation decisions within political, economic,
and social systems and institutions that directly affect people’s
current lives.
Therefore, advocacy can be seen as a deliberate process of speaking out
on issues of concern in order to exert some influence on behalf of
ideas or persons. Based on this, “ideologues of all persuasions
advocate” to bring a change in people’s lives.
We at Girlfriends Health Guide for Women of Color know that women of
color are a powerful voice that can bring about change in our
communities and country.
Our motto for 2009 is “We are the movement – let’s embrace it!” As we
take on this role of becoming agents for change we have made a
commitment to provide information to the women in our network that will
enable and empower them. We will provide the tools and access that
will assist in having a voice on Health, Wellness & Disparities.
Ptosha Davis, Associate Group Publisher for GHGFWOC has expanded her
responsibilities by taking on the role of Governmental Affairs Director
for the Health Guide as we embark on this exciting endeavor. Her new
role comes as nothing new to Ptosha who has previous experience in the
civic arena as a former chief of staff for a State Senator. “I believe
that we all have a responsibility to be politically informed and
involved. As a business owner and mother of three I struggle with the
day-to-day health care decisions that affect many women of color in the
United States. The high cost of insurance and prescriptions are a
monthly budgeting dilemma for my family and me. My commitment to
embracing this movement for change is much deeper than a business
decision; it is something that I believe in whole-heartedly because of
the well being of my family”.
We are encouraging you – our girlfriends, the women in our network to
embrace this movement and become active in your community and country
to effect change. We can no longer sit around and expect others to
make the best decisions for us. We are the decision makers for spouses,
our children, parents and ourselves. We are a mighty force to be
reckoned with………let’s embrace it!
