If you had blood pressure wouldn’t it be
nice if it knocked on your door and said, “I’m here”. But hopefully
you know that it doesn’t and that hypertension is quite a sneaky
disease. There is no alarm in your body letting you know that your
major organs are being damaged until something is seriously wrong. If
high blood pressure goes unnoticed or unmanaged, life-threatening
complications can arise.
High blood pressure can damage your arteries. The lining in your
arteries that is normally smooth, allowing blood to flow freely can
become stiff, constricting the amount of blood that flows to your major
organs and limbs. Because blood cannot reach those organs you could be
at risk for heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. In worse cases
the arteries can become so clogged that they can rupture and can cause
internal bleeding which could be fatal.
Coronary artery disease can develop and put you at a higher risk for
heart attack. Because this disease narrows the arteries blood has a
harder time getting back to the heart. The heart is a well-built
organ. While the right side works on taking in from the rest of the
body the left side works on taking it back out. High blood pressure
forces the left side to work even harder. Just think, your heart works
none stop to get blood to the rest of your body and if its overworked,
it can fail. The heart can become weak and the weaker your heart, the
more the door opens for heart attacks.
Think of your brain as the “big the boss”. Along with your heart it
runs the show in your body! High blood pressure can lead to stroke.
Blood carries the essential nutrients and oxygen all throughout your
body including your brain. If your brain is not getting those
nutrients, brain cells will die. Just like in the heart, arteries and
blood vessels can become clogged and they can rupture. In either case
you will be dealing with restricted blood flow to the brain or risking
a rupture, which can lead to bleeding in the brain. Severe damage to
your brain in any case can impair your thinking, memory, speaking, and
motor functioning.
Lets think waste management now! Kidneys, your kidneys are your bodies
own personal weight management system that is extremely important.
Which out it functioning properly, you could be headed for serious
trouble. Kidneys filter the “bad stuff” out of your blood and disposes
of it through urine. If your arteries get damaged due to high blood
pressure your kidneys will not be able to perform this function
properly and can result in kidney failure.
The list of complications can go on and on because blood goes
everywhere in your body and if your blood pressure is too high, your
entire body is at risk for damage. Learn how to control your blood
pressure and save your organs.
