Grigsby Continues Commitment to Issues
Affecting Children and Families Fairness for
Day Care Providers, Child Care Access for
Teen Mothers, Other Issues Addressed
State Representative Tamara Grigsby convened the Assembly Committee on Children and Families in order to address important issues related to Wisconsin’s families before the end of the legislative
session.
Representative Grigsby and the Assembly Children and Families Committee deliberated a number of bills, including:
• Assembly Bill 824, which establishes a Bill of Rights for both foster parents and foster children.
• Assembly Bill 886, which will increase accessibility to child care for minor teen parents so they can continue their education.
• Assembly Bill 887, which will create a waiver process for licensing day care providers in Wisconsin.
While we included public assistance fraud, and several fi nancial crimes in the list of “serious crimes” which resulted in a permanent bar for licensure or certifi ation as a child care provider,
I certainly never intended nor imagined that the term ‘public assistance fraud’ would include individuals who received a $20 overpayment for food stamps some 20 years prior, or someone in receipt of public benefits who received a used car as a gift 24 years ago and didn’t report that gift as income, or a person who received less than $50 in food stamps they were not entitled to more
than 30 years ago. We need to stop fraud, but we also need to maintain our belief in second chances for those who are deserving.
